When Deeann and I first envisioned The Table McKinney, our dream was to combine our two worlds—home and business—into a place that serves people well. We wanted a professional yet welcoming meeting venue in McKinney where relationships could grow and work could move forward. That dream gained a new layer in July 2024, when our middle daughter, Abigail, stepped in as Director of The Table.
Bringing her into the business has been one of our best decisions—and also one of our most refining. For more than 20 years, our roles were “father, mother, daughter.” Overnight, we added “boss” and “employee.” The first few months stretched us as we reset expectations, boundaries, and communication in this new reality. What began as a challenge has become one of our greatest blessings.
In family life, it’s easy to sidestep tough conversations. In business—especially when you see each other daily—avoidance isn’t an option. Working together at our meeting space in Adriatica Village forced us to address issues head-on, talk them out, and move forward quickly. What once took weeks now takes hours. It’s made us better teammates and a stronger family.
Along the way, we’ve been able to celebrate wins in real time—not “later when things settle down.” We’ve encouraged each other through challenges, and discovered that the act of building a business meeting venue for McKinney has also deepened our own connection. The Table has always been about bringing people together; we didn’t realize how much it would bring us closer, too.
